Arrest records at the Sheriff's level cover events handled by the Sheriff's Office. For court case records, Case.net covers all filings regardless of which law enforcement agency made the arrest.

Any current jail roster reflects who is held in the facility right now. It is not a criminal history. For past events, use MACHS or Case.net.

Court Records Through Case.net

Missouri Case.net covers all 114 counties in Missouri, including Osage County. The system is free and requires no account. Search by name, case number, or filing date. Results include criminal charges, all court events on the docket, motions, and how each case ended.

Case.net is the right starting point for someone who wants to trace the history of a criminal case through the courts. It shows whether a case is active, resulted in a conviction, or was dismissed or resolved by acquittal. Document images are not posted online. For physical copies of filings, contact the Osage County Circuit Clerk in Linn. Copy fees apply. Call ahead to confirm the rates before making a trip.

Note: Closed records are not visible in Case.net. If an arrest led to no charges within 30 days, or if charges were later dismissed or the defendant was acquitted, those records close under Missouri law and won't appear in standard searches.

Statewide Criminal History Through MACHS

For a statewide criminal background check, the Missouri Automated Criminal History Site at machs.mo.gov is where you start. Name-based searches cost $15 and produce a "possible match" result tied to the name entered. The "possible match" label reflects that these are name-matched results, not fingerprint-verified. Still, this search covers most of what people need for general background checking.

Name-based results include statewide convictions, arrests less than 30 days old, charges with pending outcomes, and active suspended impositions of sentence during probation. The data comes from the Missouri State Highway Patrol's Criminal Justice Information Services Division in Jefferson City. You can contact CJIS at (573) 526-6153 for questions about its records.

Fingerprint-based searches cost $20 for state-only and $33.25 with a federal FBI check. These searches return both open and closed records and are positive-identity matches. IDEMIA handles fingerprint capture at a separate fee. Notarized results cost $5 extra. For most public inquiries, the $15 name search is the right tool.

Missouri Sunshine Law and Record Access

Missouri's Chapter 610 Sunshine Law provides public access rights to criminal records held by government agencies. Arrest records are public by default once an investigation is concluded. Agencies must respond to written requests within three business days. Reasonable copy fees are allowed.

Two major exceptions close records. If someone is arrested but not charged within 30 days, the arrest record closes under Section 610.105. If charges are filed but dismissed, nolle prossed, or the defendant is found not guilty, those records also close. Closed records will not appear in standard public searches. Authorized fingerprint-based MACHS checks may still access them.

Filing a Sunshine Law request with Osage County agencies is straightforward. Address the request in writing to the specific office, specify the subject and the records you need, and keep a copy. If you don't receive a response within three business days, follow up in writing with a note of the original submission date.

Sex Offender Registry

The Missouri Sex Offender Registry is a free public tool at mshp.dps.missouri.gov, maintained by the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Search by name, date of birth, or address. The registry lists compliant and non-compliant registrants with photos, current addresses, and offense details.

For Osage County, search by address in Linn or other towns in the county to find local registrants. The toll-free number is 1-888-SOR-MSHP (1-888-767-6747). Data is updated regularly from statewide law enforcement reports.

Department of Corrections Offender Search

The Missouri DOC offender search is a free tool for finding people currently under active probation or parole supervision in Missouri. Search by name. Discharged offenders are not in the database. For questions the tool does not answer, call the Parole Board at (573) 751-8488 or email probation.parole@doc.mo.gov. The DOC main office is at 2729 Plaza Drive, Jefferson City, MO 65102.

This search works best alongside Case.net and MACHS. Used together, those three tools give you court history, statewide conviction data, and current supervision status in one pass.

Note: The DOC search does not cover discharged offenders and should not be used as a standalone background check tool.

Expungement in Osage County

Under RSMo 610.140, Missouri residents can ask the court to expunge eligible criminal records. Misdemeanor convictions require a three-year wait from final disposition. Felony convictions require seven years. The lifetime limit is one felony and two misdemeanors.

To be eligible, you must have no pending charges, all fines and restitution paid, and no new convictions except minor traffic violations. The petition is filed in the court that handled the original case. For Osage County cases, that is the Osage County Circuit Court in Linn. If the petition is granted, all state agencies must destroy the records. A denied petition means a one-year wait before you can refile.

A local attorney or legal aid service can help you assess eligibility and prepare the petition correctly. Getting it right the first time avoids delays that can come from filing errors or missing documentation.
