Nodaway County Criminal Records Quick Facts
Nodaway County Sheriff's Office
The Nodaway County Sheriff's Office is located in Maryville and is led by Sheriff Randy Strong. The office handles law enforcement for unincorporated parts of Nodaway County and manages the county jail. Arrest records from the Sheriff's Office are accessible through written requests under Missouri's Sunshine Law.
To reach the Sheriff's Office or get current contact information, visit nodawaycountysheriff.org. The site lists contact details, office hours, and any online services the office makes available. For a written records request, include the subject's full name, approximate dates of the arrest or event, and a description of the records you need. Missouri law requires agencies to respond within three business days.
If the Sheriff's Office publishes a current jail roster or inmate list online, that will show only who is currently detained. It is not a full criminal history. For past arrest data or court records going back more than a few weeks, you need to use Case.net or MACHS.
Keep your Sunshine Law request specific. Agencies can respond faster when they know exactly what record you are asking about. Vague requests often require back-and-forth clarification that slows the process.
Court Records Through Case.net
Missouri Case.net is the free statewide court records system that covers all 114 Missouri counties, including Nodaway. No account is needed. Search by name, case number, or filing date. The system returns criminal charges, all court hearing events, motions, and the final outcome for each case.
Case.net is the best tool for tracking the history of a criminal case through the courts. It shows whether a case is active, ended in conviction, or was dismissed or resolved by acquittal. Document images are not available online. Copies of filings require a visit or written request to the Nodaway County Circuit Clerk in Maryville. Copy fees apply, and certified copies cost more than standard ones.
Note: Closed records do not appear in Case.net searches. Under Missouri law, if an arrest results in no charges within 30 days, the arrest record closes to the public. Records also close when charges are dismissed, nolle prossed, or the defendant is acquitted.
Statewide Criminal History Through MACHS
The Missouri Automated Criminal History Site at machs.mo.gov provides statewide criminal background checks for anyone in Missouri, including Nodaway County residents. Name-based searches cost $15 and return a "possible match" result. The "possible match" label means results are keyed to the name you enter, not a confirmed fingerprint identity. Despite that limit, a name search covers most of what the public needs.
Name-based results include convictions from any Missouri county, arrests under 30 days old, charges with pending outcomes, and active suspended impositions of sentence during probation. All of this data is drawn from the statewide criminal history repository maintained by the Missouri State Highway Patrol's Criminal Justice Information Services Division in Jefferson City. CJIS can be reached at (573) 526-6153.
Fingerprint-based searches cost $20 for state-only and $33.25 with an FBI check. These are positive-identity matches that return both open and closed records. IDEMIA handles fingerprint capture at a separate fee. Notarized results cost $5 extra. Use the name search for general inquiries. Fingerprint searches are for formal, legal, or licensing requirements.
Missouri Sunshine Law and Public Records Rights
Missouri's Chapter 610 Sunshine Law gives residents the right to access public government records, including criminal records held by county agencies. Arrest records are generally public once an investigation is concluded. Agencies must respond to written requests within three business days and can charge reasonable fees for copies.
Two exceptions close records to public view. Section 610.105 closes an arrest record if no charges are filed within 30 days. Records also close when charges are filed but later dismissed, nolle prossed, or the person is acquitted. You won't find these in standard public searches. Authorized agencies may access them through fingerprint-based MACHS requests.
When submitting a Sunshine Law request to the Nodaway County Sheriff's Office or another local agency, write it clearly and address it to the right office. Include the subject's name, the relevant time period, and what type of record you need. Keep copies of everything you send and receive.
Sex Offender Registry
The Missouri Sex Offender Registry at mshp.dps.missouri.gov is a free public tool run by the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Search by name, date of birth, or address. The registry lists both compliant and non-compliant registrants with photos, current addresses, and offense details.
To find registered sex offenders in Nodaway County, search by address in Maryville or other towns in the county. The toll-free number is 1-888-SOR-MSHP (1-888-767-6747). The registry is updated regularly from law enforcement reports across the state.
Department of Corrections Offender Search
The Missouri DOC offender search is free and covers people currently on probation or parole. Search by first and last name. Discharged offenders are not in the database. The tool is most useful for verifying that someone is under active supervision. For a broader criminal background picture, combine this with Case.net and MACHS.
For questions the online tool does not answer, contact the Parole Board at (573) 751-8488 or email probation.parole@doc.mo.gov. The main DOC address is 2729 Plaza Drive, Jefferson City, MO 65102.
Note: Active supervision status alone does not give you a person's full criminal history. Use this tool as one of several sources.
Expungement in Nodaway County
Missouri's expungement statute, RSMo 610.140, allows eligible residents to petition to have criminal records destroyed. For misdemeanor convictions, the required wait is three years from final disposition. For felony convictions, it is seven years. The lifetime limit is one felony and two misdemeanors.
Eligibility conditions include no pending charges, full payment of fines and restitution, and no new convictions other than minor traffic violations. The petition is filed in the court that handled the original case. For Nodaway County matters, that is the Nodaway County Circuit Court in Maryville. If granted, all state agencies must destroy the records. A denied petition requires a one-year wait before refiling.
Getting legal help before you file is a good move. Attorneys or legal aid services familiar with Missouri expungement law can assess your eligibility and help you file a correct petition, which reduces the chance of delays or denial on procedural grounds.
