Gentry County Criminal Records Quick Facts
Gentry County Sheriff's Office and Arrest Records
The Gentry County Sheriff's Office is the main law enforcement agency for the county and the primary keeper of local arrest records. The office maintains records for arrests made in the county including booking data, charges, bond information, and inmate status at the county jail. The office is located at the county courthouse in Albany, Missouri.
To access arrest records, contact the Gentry County Sheriff's Office during business hours. In-person visits are the most common approach. Bring a photo ID when you visit. Call ahead to ask whether the office accepts written or mailed requests and what information you'll need to provide. For current jail roster information, calling the Sheriff's Office directly is the quickest way to check whether someone is in custody.
Under Missouri's Sunshine Law (Chapter 610), arrest and incident records are public once a case is closed. Section 610.105 says that if an arrest does not result in charges within 30 days, that arrest record becomes closed. Cases that were dismissed or resulted in acquittal also close. Records for convictions and active pending cases are generally open to the public.
Note: arrests made within Albany city limits by the Albany Police Department result in records held at the police department, not the Sheriff's Office. Contact the local police directly for those records.
Court Records and Missouri Case.net
The Gentry County Circuit Clerk maintains records for all criminal cases filed in the county. These include felony charges, misdemeanor cases, and traffic violations with criminal elements. For online access to court records, Missouri Case.net is the main free tool and covers all 114 Missouri counties.
Case.net does not require registration. Search by defendant name, case number, filing date, or scheduled hearing date. Results include case status, charges, docket entries, parties, and judgments. Document images are not available. For copies of actual court filings, contact the Circuit Clerk's office in Albany. Copying and certification fees apply for printed records.
Juvenile cases, sealed records, and adoption files are not available through Case.net. For case types that fall outside the public court records system, contact the Circuit Clerk to ask what options exist for accessing those records, if any.
Note: Case.net is updated regularly but may not show same-day filings. For the most current status on an active case, call the Circuit Clerk's office in Albany directly.
Statewide Criminal History Through MACHS
The Missouri Automated Criminal History Site (MACHS) allows any member of the public to run a statewide criminal background check by name. The fee is $15 per request. No consent from the subject is needed. Results are a "possible match" based on open public records: convictions, arrests less than 30 days old, charges awaiting final disposition, and suspended imposition of sentence records during probation. MACHS accepts all major credit cards and typically returns results in 5 to 7 business days.
For a more complete check, fingerprint-based MACHS searches cost $20 for state records only or about $41.75 with the FBI check. These searches include closed records and some expunged data. Fingerprinting is done through IDEMIA at a scheduled appointment. State checks take 7 to 10 business days. Out-of-state checks take 4 to 6 weeks.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol CJIS Division manages MACHS and the statewide criminal history repository. Address: 1510 East Elm Street, Jefferson City, MO 65101. Phone: (573) 526-6153.
DOC Offender Search and Sex Offender Registry
The Missouri Department of Corrections Offender Search is a free name-based search for active probationers, parolees, and current state prison inmates. Discharged offenders are not shown. If someone is held at the Gentry County Jail rather than a state facility, contact the Sheriff's Office directly for that information.
The Missouri Sex Offender Registry lets you search for registered sex offenders in Gentry County by name, date of birth, or address. The registry covers compliant and non-compliant registrants, absconders, incarcerated offenders, and those who have moved out of state. Offense details, photos, and registration addresses are included. The toll-free number is 1-888-767-6747.
Missouri Sunshine Law and Gentry County Records
Missouri's open records law, Chapter 610 of the Revised Statutes, gives the public a right to access most government records. Section 610.023 requires agencies to respond to records requests within three business days. They can provide the records, deny with a specific legal reason, or notify you of a delay.
In Gentry County, records requests for arrests go to the Sheriff's Office and requests for court case data go to the Circuit Clerk. Being specific helps the agency find records faster. Include the full name, approximate dates, and type of record you need. Sealed records, juvenile files, and records containing sensitive personal data can be withheld. Improper denials can be challenged through the Missouri Attorney General's office.
Expungement of Gentry County Criminal Records
Missouri's expungement law, RSMo Section 610.140, allows eligible individuals to petition the circuit court to destroy criminal records. The waiting period is three years for misdemeanors and seven years for felonies, counted from the date the case ended. You must have no other convictions beyond traffic violations, no pending charges, and all fines and restitution paid.
Missouri limits lifetime expungements to one felony and two misdemeanors per person. For Gentry County cases, the petition is filed at the Gentry County Circuit Court in Albany. If approved, all state agencies must destroy their records. A denial means waiting one year before refiling. An attorney familiar with Missouri criminal law can help assess eligibility and build the petition.
The MSHP CJIS Division at (573) 526-6153 can tell you what records exist for a specific person and how an expungement approval would affect them. The Missouri Department of Public Safety also provides resources for navigating the criminal justice system in Missouri.
