Dallas County Criminal Records Quick Facts
Dallas County Court Records and Case.net
The Dallas County Circuit Clerk keeps records of all criminal cases filed in the county. Every charge that goes through the circuit court, from low-level misdemeanors to felony cases, is recorded and filed with the Clerk. The fastest way to look up Dallas County court records online is through Missouri Case.net.
Case.net is the official online court records system for all Missouri circuit courts. It's free and open to the public without registration. You can search by a person's name, case number, filing date, or scheduled hearing. Results show charges, case status, docket entries, parties, and judgments. Document images are not available through Case.net, but that information is enough to confirm whether a case exists and how it resolved.
For complete copies of court filings, motions, or plea agreements, you need to contact the Circuit Clerk's office in Buffalo. Copying fees apply for printed records. Certified copies cost more than standard copies. Call ahead to ask about current fees and whether requests can be submitted by mail or email.
Note: Case.net does not include juvenile cases or sealed records. If you believe records are sealed that should be public, that question is best directed to the Circuit Clerk.
Dallas County Sheriff's Office and Arrest Records
The Dallas County Sheriff's Office is the main law enforcement agency for the county and maintains arrest records for all arrests made by the office. The Sheriff also runs the county jail in Buffalo. When someone is arrested in Dallas County, a record is created with their name, date of birth, charges, booking date, and bond details.
You can contact the Dallas County government to find the Sheriff's Office contact information and learn how to submit a records request. In-person requests during business hours are standard. Some offices accept mailed requests with a written description of what you need. For recent bookings and jail roster information, calling the Sheriff's Office is the quickest approach.
Missouri's Sunshine Law, Chapter 610 of the Revised Statutes, says arrest records are public once a case is closed. Under Section 610.105, arrests that did not result in charges within 30 days become closed to the public. Cases that were dismissed or ended in acquittal also close. Convictions and active cases are generally open and accessible.
Statewide Criminal Background Checks
The Missouri Automated Criminal History Site (MACHS) lets any member of the public request a name-based criminal background check for $15. The search covers criminal history from across all of Missouri and does not require the subject's consent. Results are a "possible match" based on public records including convictions, arrests less than 30 days old, charges awaiting final disposition, and suspended imposition of sentence during probation.
For a more complete picture, a fingerprint-based MACHS search costs $20 for state records or $41.75 with the federal FBI check included. Fingerprint searches return a "positive match" and include closed records and some expunged data. You schedule fingerprinting through IDEMIA. State checks take 7 to 10 business days. MACHS accepts all major credit cards.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol Criminal Justice Information Services Division runs MACHS and maintains the state's central criminal history repository. Their address is 1510 East Elm Street, Jefferson City, MO 65101. Phone: (573) 526-6153.
Missouri DOC Offender Search
If you are looking for someone who may have served time in a Missouri state prison or is currently on probation or parole, the Missouri Department of Corrections Offender Search is free and searchable by name. It covers active offenders supervised by the DOC. Discharged offenders are not shown. The DOC manages 21 state facilities and handles probation and parole for offenders released from state prisons.
For information on someone currently housed in the Dallas County Jail rather than a state facility, the DOC search will not help. Instead, contact the Dallas County Sheriff's Office directly for current jail roster information. The two systems, county jail and state DOC, are separate and track different populations.
Note: the DOC search may not include certain offenders excluded for safety or confidentiality reasons. For complete records, a MACHS search through the CJIS Division is the more thorough option.
Sex Offender Registry and Missouri DPS Resources
The Missouri Sex Offender Registry is maintained by the State Highway Patrol and is searchable by name, date of birth, or address. You can find registered sex offenders living in Dallas County through this tool. The registry shows photos, addresses, and offense details when available. It covers compliant and non-compliant offenders, absconders, incarcerated offenders, and those who have moved out of state. The toll-free number is 1-888-767-6747.
The Missouri Department of Public Safety oversees public safety programs across the state, including victim services and background check coordination. DPS is a useful resource if you need help navigating the various agencies involved in criminal records in Missouri.
Sunshine Law and Your Right to Records in Dallas County
Missouri's Sunshine Law gives the public broad access to government records, including most criminal records held by local agencies. Under Chapter 610, government bodies must respond to records requests within three business days. They can provide the records, deny the request with a legal reason, or notify you of a delay.
In Dallas County, records requests for criminal history go to the Sheriff's Office for arrest records and the Circuit Clerk for court records. In-person requests are common, but you can also write a letter or call to start the process. Be specific in your request, providing as much detail as you have about the person or case you are researching.
Sealed records, juvenile files, and records with sensitive personal data like Social Security numbers can be withheld even from public requests. If your request is denied, the agency must explain why in writing. You can challenge denials through the Missouri Attorney General's office or in circuit court.
Expungement of Dallas County Criminal Records
Missouri's expungement law, RSMo Section 610.140, lets eligible individuals petition the court to destroy their criminal records. The waiting period is three years after final disposition for misdemeanors and seven years for felonies. You must have no other convictions beyond traffic violations, no open charges, and all fines and restitution fully paid.
Missouri allows one felony expungement and two misdemeanor expungements per lifetime. The petition is filed in the circuit court where the original case was heard. For Dallas County cases, that is the Dallas County Circuit Court in Buffalo. If the court grants it, all state agencies including the Highway Patrol must destroy their copies of the records.
If the petition is denied, you wait one year before filing again. An attorney familiar with Missouri criminal law can help you assess whether your record qualifies and how to build the strongest petition. The MSHP CJIS Division can also tell you what records currently exist for a given person.
