Cedar County Sheriff's Office

The Cedar County Sheriff's Office in Stockton handles all law enforcement for unincorporated Cedar County and operates the county jail. The official county website at cedarcountymo.gov links to the Sheriff's Office at cedarcountymo.gov/sheriff. The Sheriff's Office is where you start for arrest records, inmate information, and law enforcement-related public records requests.

Arrest records held by the Cedar County Sheriff's Office are public under Missouri's Sunshine Law unless closed by a specific legal provision. Under Section 610.105, if a person is arrested but no criminal charge is filed within 30 days, the arrest record closes. If charges are later dismissed, dropped, or result in a not-guilty verdict, those records also close to the public. These closed records are not available through standard public requests.

For records requests that you cannot handle online, submit a written request to the Sheriff's Office. The agency must respond within three business days under Missouri's Sunshine Law. State the subject's full name, the approximate date of the incident, and what specific records you need. A clear written request is easier to process and gives you a paper trail if there is any dispute about the response.

Cedar County government departments including the Sheriff's Office and Circuit Clerk can be found through the county's official website.

Circuit Court Records

The Cedar County Circuit Clerk's office in Stockton is the official record keeper for all court filings in the county. This includes criminal cases, charges, plea records, hearing schedules, and final dispositions. The Circuit Clerk information is available at cedarcountymo.gov/circuit-clerk. In-person requests for copies of court records are handled during regular business hours. Copy fees apply.

For online access, Missouri Case.net covers Cedar County and every other Missouri county. Case.net is free and requires no registration. Search by a person's name, case number, or filing date. Results show charges, all court activity, case status, and the final outcome. This is the fastest no-cost way to check for criminal court records tied to Cedar County. Closed and expunged records do not appear in Case.net results.

Copies of actual court documents, such as police reports or motions, are not available through Case.net. Contact the Circuit Clerk directly for those. Certified copies of court records cost more than plain copies. Ask the clerk's office about current rates and estimated wait times when you call.

Statewide Criminal History: MACHS

For a criminal history search that covers all of Missouri rather than just Cedar County court records, the Missouri Automated Criminal History Site at machs.mo.gov is the primary resource. Name-based searches cost $15. The results are called a "possible match" because the system matches by name, not fingerprints. This is important to remember when reviewing results for common names.

Open records available through a MACHS name search include Missouri convictions, charges with pending dispositions, arrests less than 30 days old, and suspended impositions of sentence during active probation. These are the records any member of the public can access without restriction. Closed records, such as arrests that did not result in charges within 30 days or dismissed cases, are excluded from public name searches. Processing typically takes 5 to 7 business days. Notarized results are available for $5 more.

Fingerprint-based searches provide more complete results. A state-only fingerprint check costs $20. Adding the FBI check raises the total to $33.25. These are "positive match" results that include both open and closed records. Fingerprint capture is handled by IDEMIA. The MSHP CJIS Division in Jefferson City handles questions at (573) 526-6153.

Sunshine Law and Your Rights

Missouri's Chapter 610 Sunshine Law governs access to public records across all county agencies in Cedar County. The law makes arrest records open to the public by default. Agencies must respond to records requests within three business days. Copy fees must be reasonable. If a request is denied, the agency must cite the specific legal provision that closes the record.

Two main exceptions close criminal records. No charge within 30 days of arrest closes the record under Section 610.105. Dismissals, nolle prosses, and not-guilty verdicts close records for those specific charges. In both cases, the subject of the record retains access to their own records. Other members of the public cannot get closed records through standard requests. Authorized agencies with fingerprint-based access can still retrieve closed records through MSHP CJIS.

Sex Offender Registry and DOC Search

The Missouri Sex Offender Registry at mshp.dps.missouri.gov is a free public search tool. You can search by name, date of birth, or address and view photos, current addresses, and offense information. The toll-free number is 1-888-SOR-MSHP (1-888-767-6747). Cedar County residents can check for registered sex offenders in Stockton or anywhere else in the county.

The Missouri DOC Offender Search covers people currently on probation or parole under state supervision. Search by first and last name. The tool only returns active offenders. Discharged individuals do not appear. For parole board questions, call (573) 751-8488 or email probation.parole@doc.mo.gov.

Record Expungement

Missouri's expungement law at RSMo 610.140 lets eligible Cedar County residents petition the court to have criminal records destroyed. The waiting period is three years for misdemeanors and seven years for felonies after the date of final disposition. Lifetime limits are one felony and two misdemeanors. The petition is filed with the Cedar County Circuit Court in Stockton.

Requirements include no pending charges, no new convictions beyond traffic violations, and full payment of all court-ordered fines and restitution. If approved, state agencies must destroy their records, and the case will no longer appear in MACHS or Case.net. A denied petition means a one-year wait before refiling. Cedar County residents seeking expungement should consult a licensed Missouri attorney or a legal aid organization for help with the process.

Note: Expungement removes the record from public state databases. It does not automatically clear records from private databases or federal systems that may have previously captured the information.
