Crawford County Sheriff's Office

The Crawford County Sheriff's Office is the primary law enforcement agency for the county and the main keeper of local arrest records. The office handles patrol, county jail operations, and criminal investigations across Crawford County. For many records requests, this is the first place to call or visit.

The Crawford County Sheriff's Office website provides information on jail operations, law enforcement contacts, and links to public safety resources. Arrest records at the Sheriff's Office include booking data, charges filed at the time of arrest, bond information, and inmate status. If you want to know whether someone is currently held at the Crawford County Jail, contacting the Sheriff's Office directly is the fastest option.

Records requests can be made in person at the courthouse in Steelville during normal business hours. You can also call the Sheriff's Office to ask about specific records or find out what documentation is needed. Bring a photo ID when making in-person requests. Note: copying fees may apply for printed records, so ask about costs before you go.

Court Records and Missouri Case.net

Crawford County court records are managed by the Circuit Clerk as part of the 8th Judicial Circuit. All criminal cases filed in Crawford County, from misdemeanors to felony charges, are recorded in the Circuit Clerk's office. The quickest way to search these records is through Missouri Case.net, the state's free online court records system.

Case.net covers all 114 counties in Missouri. Search options include litigant name, case number, filing date, and scheduled hearing date. Results show case status, charges, parties, docket entries, and judgments. The system does not show document images, so if you need actual copies of filings, you'll need to contact the Circuit Clerk directly in Steelville.

Active criminal cases are almost always public. Cases that were dismissed or resulted in acquittals may be closed to the public under Missouri's Sunshine Law, depending on how the case ended. Cases involving juveniles are sealed by default and not accessible through Case.net.

Note: Case.net is updated regularly but may not reflect same-day court activity. For the most current case status, call the Circuit Clerk's office directly.

Arrest Records in Crawford County

When law enforcement makes an arrest in Crawford County, they generate a record that includes the person's name, date of birth, charges, and booking details. The Sheriff's Office creates and stores these records for arrests it makes. The Steelville Police Department handles arrests inside city limits and keeps its own set of incident and arrest records.

Under Missouri's Sunshine Law (Chapter 610), arrest records are public once a case is closed. Section 610.105 of the Revised Statutes says that if someone is arrested but not charged within 30 days, that arrest record becomes closed to the public. If charges are filed but later dismissed, or the person is found not guilty, those records also close. This means convictions and active cases are generally easier to find through public channels.

Recent arrests and bookings at the Crawford County Jail are typically reflected on jail roster sites that pull from public data. You can also submit a direct public records request to the Sheriff's Office under the Missouri Sunshine Law. The agency has up to three business days to respond to that request.

Statewide Criminal History Search Through MACHS

For a broader search that covers Crawford County and the rest of Missouri, the Missouri Automated Criminal History Site (MACHS) is the main tool. Anyone can run a name-based search through MACHS without getting the subject's consent. The fee is $15 per request plus a small convenience fee, and results come back within five to seven business days.

A name-based MACHS search is a "possible match" search. It returns open records only, including convictions, arrests less than 30 days old, charges waiting on final disposition, and suspended imposition of sentence records during probation. If you need a more complete picture, including closed records and expunged information, you need a fingerprint-based search. That costs $20 for a state-only check or around $41.75 with the federal FBI check added in. Fingerprints must be taken through IDEMIA at a scheduled appointment.

MACHS accepts all major credit cards. The Missouri State Highway Patrol's Criminal Justice Information Services Division (CJIS) processes all these checks and maintains the central criminal history repository for the state. Their physical office is at 1510 East Elm Street in Jefferson City.

Missouri DOC Offender Search and Sex Offender Registry

Two other state tools can help when searching Crawford County criminal records. The Missouri Department of Corrections Offender Search lets you look up active offenders supervised by the DOC, including those on probation or parole. The search is free and uses first and last name. It does not show discharged offenders or those excluded for safety reasons.

The Missouri Sex Offender Registry, maintained by the State Highway Patrol, is searchable by name, date of birth, or address. The registry includes compliant and non-compliant offenders, as well as those who have moved out of state. Photos, addresses, and offense details are included when available. The toll-free number for the registry is 1-888-767-6747.

Neither of these tools replaces the MACHS search or a court records search through Case.net, but they can fill in gaps when you're looking for specific types of information about someone who may have been in the Crawford County criminal justice system.

Missouri Sunshine Law and Public Records in Crawford County

Missouri's public records law, set out in Chapter 610 of the Revised Statutes, gives the public a right to access most government records. Criminal records fall under this law, with some exceptions. Arrest reports and incident records are public once a case is closed.

Section 610.023 requires any records custodian to respond to a request within three business days. They can provide the records, deny the request and explain why, or let you know when records will be available if more time is needed. When a request is denied, the agency must cite a specific legal reason.

Crawford County Sheriff's Office and the Circuit Clerk's office both handle public records requests for their respective records. You can submit a request by going in person, calling the office, mailing a written request, or, in some cases, by email. Make the request specific so the agency can respond efficiently.

Note: sealed records, juvenile files, and records containing sensitive personal information like Social Security numbers may be withheld even under a Sunshine Law request.

Expungement of Criminal Records in Crawford County

Missouri law allows some people to have their criminal records destroyed through expungement. The law is RSMo Section 610.140. For misdemeanors, the waiting period after case disposition is three years. For felonies, it is seven years. You cannot have any other convictions beyond minor traffic violations, must have no pending charges, and must have paid all fines and restitution.

Missouri limits lifetime expungements to one felony and two misdemeanors per person. To start the process, you file a petition in the circuit court where the original conviction occurred. For Crawford County cases, that is the Crawford County Circuit Court in Steelville. If the court approves the petition, all state agencies must destroy their records of the case.

If the court denies the petition, you must wait at least one year before filing again. The MSHP CJIS Division at (573) 526-6153 can tell you what records currently exist for a specific person and how expungement would affect them.
