Current inmate information is available through the Jail Division at casscounty.com/departments/sheriffs-office/jail-division. The roster shows who is currently held in the Cass County jail. Booking information typically includes the name, charges, and bond amounts for current detainees. This is not a historical criminal record; it only reflects people currently in custody.
Cass County is in western Missouri's Kansas City metro area, which means the county handles a significant volume of criminal cases. The Sheriff's Office processes a steady stream of arrests and jail bookings. Public records requests to the Sheriff's Office are handled under the Missouri Sunshine Law. The agency must respond within three business days. Written requests work best, especially if you need records from a specific time period or for a specific person.
The MACHS portal handles statewide criminal history searches for Missouri residents, including those in Cass County.
Access the statewide name-based criminal history search at machs.mo.gov for $15 per search.
MACHS is operated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and serves residents in all 114 Missouri counties, including Cass County.
Court Records Through Case.net
Cass County is in the 17th Judicial Circuit. The Cass County Circuit Court in Harrisonville handles all criminal cases filed in the county. For free online access to court records, Missouri Case.net covers Cass County and every other Missouri county. No registration is needed, and there is no charge to search.
A Case.net search by name will show you all criminal cases on file for that person in Missouri's court system, including Cass County. Results include the charges, all court dates and events, case status, and the final disposition. The system can show you whether a case ended in a conviction, dismissal, or acquittal. You can also search by case number if you have it, which returns results faster.
Case.net does not provide document images. Copies of court filings, such as police reports, affidavits, or sentencing documents, require an in-person visit or a written request to the Cass County Circuit Clerk in Harrisonville. Fees apply, and certified copies cost more than standard ones. Ask about the current fee schedule when you contact the clerk's office.
Note: Closed records do not appear in Case.net. This includes arrests that did not result in charges within 30 days, dismissed cases, and cases that ended in not-guilty verdicts.
Statewide Criminal Background Checks
For a broader search covering all of Missouri, the Missouri Automated Criminal History Site at machs.mo.gov is the standard tool. A name-based search costs $15. The result is called a "possible match" because it is tied to the name entered, not a fingerprint-verified identity. This means results require some care, especially for common names.
Name-based searches return open records only. Open records include: Missouri convictions, charges with pending final dispositions, arrests made within the last 30 days, and suspended impositions of sentence during active probation. These are publicly accessible without restriction. Closed records, such as arrests that did not lead to charges within 30 days, do not appear in public name searches.
Fingerprint searches are more definitive. A state-only check costs $20. Adding the FBI check raises the total to $33.25. Fingerprint results are "positive match" and include both open and closed records. IDEMIA handles fingerprint appointments. An additional $5 gets you a notarized copy of the results. Questions about either type of search go to the MSHP CJIS Division at (573) 526-6153 in Jefferson City.
Sunshine Law and Record Access in Cass County
Missouri's Chapter 610 Sunshine Law governs public access to government records including criminal records held by Cass County agencies. The law requires agencies to respond to requests within three business days. Records of arrests are generally public. But two situations close arrest records to the public: no charge within 30 days under Section 610.105, and dismissal or not-guilty outcomes once charges are filed.
When submitting a request to the Cass County Sheriff's Office or Circuit Clerk, write out your request clearly. State the full name of the subject, relevant dates or case numbers if you have them, and the specific records you want. Agencies must tell you which legal provision justifies any denial. Cass County handles significant records volume given its proximity to the Kansas City metro, so being organized and specific in your request helps get results faster.
Missouri legal aid organizations can help Cass County residents who have trouble getting records or need help understanding what records they can access under the Sunshine Law.
Sex Offender Registry
Missouri's Sex Offender Registry is managed by the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The free searchable tool is at mshp.dps.missouri.gov. You can search by name, date of birth, or address and get results that include photos, current addresses, and offense details. The toll-free line is 1-888-SOR-MSHP (1-888-767-6747). Cass County residents can search for registered sex offenders in Harrisonville or any other part of the county using this tool.
For people under active DOC supervision, use the Missouri DOC Offender Search to check probation and parole status. This free tool searches by name and covers active offenders only. Discharged offenders are not included.
Expungement in Cass County
Eligible Cass County residents can petition for expungement under RSMo 610.140. The waiting periods are three years for misdemeanors and seven years for felonies, measured from the date of final disposition. The lifetime cap is one felony and two misdemeanors. The petition is filed with the Cass County Circuit Court in Harrisonville.
To qualify, you must have no pending criminal charges, no new convictions beyond traffic violations, and must have paid all court-ordered fines and restitution. If approved, all state agencies must destroy their records of the case. The case will no longer show in MACHS name searches or Case.net. A denied petition requires a one-year wait before you can refile. Harrisonville-area attorneys or Missouri legal aid groups can help you evaluate whether you qualify and prepare the filing correctly.
Note: Expungement under Missouri law does not automatically affect federal records. If a case involved federal charges or federal databases, expungement of state records may not remove it from all sources.
